ANTISEDAN®
(atipamezole hydrochloride)
Injectable

Description

  • Injectable alpha 2-adrenergic antagonist which reverses sedative and analgesic effects of DEXDOMITOR (dexmedetomidine hydrochloride) and DOMITOR (medetomidine hydrochloride) in dogs.

  • DEXDOMITOR-ANTISEDAN and DOMITOR-ANTISEDAN combinations provide a safe, predictable canine sedation/analgesia and reversal system.
Approved Uses

ANTISEDAN® (atipamezole hydrochloride) is approved for:
  • Reversal of the clinical effects of the sedative and analgesic agents DEXDOMITOR and DOMITOR in dogs.
Key Features
  • Provides predictable, rapid reversal of sedation in 5 to 10 minutes.

  • Smooth, controlled recovery with minimal risk for relapse into sedation.

  • Dosage size (volume) for DEXDOMITOR, DOMITOR and ANTISEDAN are the same, so no dosage recalculation is required.

  • DEXDOMITOR, DOMITOR and ANTISEDAN are non-scheduled, non-opioid agents, minimizing record-keeping requirements.
Packaging

10 mL multidose vials containing 5.0 mg of atipamezole hydrochloride per mL.

Dosage and Administration
  • ANTISEDAN is administered intramuscularly, regardless of the route used for DEXDOMITOR or DOMITOR. The concentration of ANTISEDAN has been formulated so that the volume of injection is the same (mL for mL) as the recommended dose volume of DEXDOMITOR or DOMITOR. Although injection volumes are the same, the concentration of ANTISEDAN (5.0 mg/mL) is 10 times that of DEXDOMITOR (0.5 mg/mL) and 5 times that of DOMITOR (1.0 mg/mL).

  • ANTISEDAN may be given any time following DEXDOMITOR or DOMITOR administration. Dogs that are sedated but ambulatory may be treated with ANTISEDAN if warranted.
Caution

See label instructions for complete caution, contraindications, warnings and precautions.
  • Federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.
Contraindications
  • ANTISEDAN should not be used in dogs with cardiac disease, respiratory disorders, liver or kidney diseases, dogs in shock, severely debilitated, or dogs stressed due to extreme heat, cold or fatigue

  • ANTISEDAN is contraindicated in dogs with a known hypersensitivity to the drug

  • Occasional vomiting may occur. Other effects observed include hypersalivation, diarrhea and tremors
Warnings
  • Not for human use. Keep out of reach of children.

  • ANTISEDAN can be absorbed by humans and may cause irritation following direct exposure to skin, eyes or mouth. In case of accidental eye exposure, flush with water for 15 minutes. In case of accidental skin exposure, wash with soap and water. Remove contaminated clothing. In case of accidental oral exposure or injection, seek medical attention.

  • Users with cardiovascular disease (e.g., hypertension or ischemic heart disease) should take special precautions to avoid any exposure to this product.

  • Precaution should be used while handling and using filled syringes.
Precautions
  • ANTISEDAN can produce an abrupt reversal of sedation and, presumably, analgesia. The potential for apprehensive or aggressive behavior should be considered in the handling of dogs emerging from sedation, especially those predisposed to nervousness or fright. Persons handling dogs that have recently received ANTISEDAN should use caution and also avoid situations where a dog could fall.

  • Animals should be monitored closely, particularly for persistent hypothermia, bradycardia, and depressed respiration, until the animal has recovered completely.

  • ANTISEDAN reverses analgesic effects as well as sedative effects. Additional pain management may be required.

  • The safety of ANTISEDAN has not been evaluated in dogs with compromised health. Geriatric, debilitated and ill dogs and dogs with cardiovascular system abnormalities are especially at risk.

  • ANTISEDAN has not been evaluated in breeding, pregnant or lactating dogs.

  • ANTISEDAN has not been evaluated in dogs less than 4 months of age or in dogs weighing less than 4.4 lbs (2 kg).

Important Safety Information

Do not use DEXDOMITOR or DOMITOR in dogs and DEXDOMITOR in cats with cardiovascular disease, respiratory disorders, liver or kidney diseases, or in conditions of shock, severe debilitation, or stress due to extreme heat, cold or fatigue. As with all a2-adrenoceptor agonists, the potential for isolated cases of hypersensitivity, including paradoxical response (excitation), exists. Arrhythmias, bradycardia, emesis were observed in the DEXDOMITOR and DOMITOR clinical field studies in dogs. DEXDOMITOR has not been evaluated for use in breeding, pregnant, or lactating dogs and cats. In cats, vomiting, urinary incontinence and hypersalivation were observed with DEXDOMITOR. Refer to the full prescribing information for more safety information.
