Description
BOVI-SHIELD® BRSV is a freeze-dried preparation of an attenuated modified-live BRSV propagated on an established bovine cell line, plus a sterile diluent used to rehydrate the vaccine.
Approved Uses
BOVI-SHIELD BRSV is approved for:
- Vaccination of healthy cattle, including pregnant cows, as an aid in preventing disease caused by bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV).

- BOVI-SHIELD™ vaccine family provides the potency of modified-live virus (MLV) agents for respiratory and reproductive diseases caused by bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV), bovine infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR), parainfluenza type 3 (PI3), and bovine virus diarrhea (BVD).
- There are 10 combinations in the market-leading BOVI-SHIELD vaccine family for customized disease protection in dairy cattle.1
- BRSV vaccination can be a worthwhile investment. Severe disease often occurs when BRSV infection occurs simultaneously with other respiratory agents, such as another virus or Haemophilus somnus or Pasteurella.2
- Safety of the BRSV component in BOVI-SHIELD was demonstrated in more than 1,000 pregnant cows in all trimesters of pregnancy.3,4
- Unlike some MLV products, there is no age restriction on BOVI-SHIELD vaccines.
- Buyers pay more for vaccinated calves. Since 1997, Colorado State University has closely followed the prices paid for calves sold through Superior Livestock Auction and has identified factors that help some calves bring a higher price at sale time. Calves in a health and management program have been shown to bring up to $21 per head more at sale time than calves that were not pre-weaned or vaccinated prior to sale.5

Dosage and Administration
Vaccine is administered in 2-mL intramuscular (IM) doses. In accordance with Beef Quality Assurance guidelines, vaccine should be administered in the muscular region of the neck.
Primary Vaccination: Administer 2 IM doses 3–4 weeks apart. To avoid possible maternal antibody interference with active immunization, calves vaccinated before the age of 6 months should be revaccinated after 6 months of age.
Revaccination: Annual revaccination with a single dose is recommended.
Precautions
- Do not use in calves nursing pregnant cows (abortions can result).
- Store at 2°– 7° C. Prolonged exposure to higher temperatures may adversely affect potency. Do not freeze.
- Use entire contents when first opened.
- Sterilized syringes and needles should be used to administer this vaccine. Do not sterilize with chemicals because traces of disinfectant may inactivate the vaccine.
- Burn containers and all unused contents.
- Do not vaccinate within 21 days before slaughter.
- Contains gentamicin as preservative use.
- As with many vaccines, anaphylaxis may occur after use. Initial antidote of epinephrine is recommended and should be followed with appropriate supportive therapy.
- This product has been shown to be efficacious in healthy animals. A protective immune response may not be elicited if animals are incubating an infectious disease, are malnourished or parasitized, are stressed due to shipment or environmental conditions, are otherwise immunocompromised, or the vaccine is not administered in accordance with label directions.
- Vaccinating too early, failing to give the recommended second dose to heifers or failing to revaccinate late calves can reduce the effectiveness of your program and increase the risk of sickness.
