Scheduled Farrowing

LUTALYSE® (dinoprost tromethamine) Sterile Solution used for parturition induction increases productivity

Administering 2 mL of LUTALYSE to sows within 72 hours of the expected farrowing date helps synchronize the farrowing schedule.

Benefits of parturition induction include:

  • better use of cross-fostering

  • reduced labor costs, especially during weekends and holidays

  • more efficient movement of pigs through the farrowing house

  • convenient batching of sows and piglets for routine care

  • more uniform groups of piglets on an age basis

  • planned cleaning and disinfection of farrowing houses after "all-in, all-out" management

  • grouping of piglets of similar age and weight, allowing for better
coordination of tail docking, tooth clipping, iron injections, vaccinations, etc.
A dose response study (3) compared sows and gilts treated with LUTALYSE to untreated sows and gilts.

Figure 1: Cumulative percent sows/gilts farrowing during sequential 12-hour intervals

Study completed with sows/gilts injected once at 111-113 days of gestation.

Results shown:
  • 100 percent of treated sows farrowed within 72 hours of injection vs. 144 hours for untreated sows

  • 89 percent of treated vs. 31 percent of untreated sows had farrowed within 36 hours of injection

  • 97 percent of sows had farrowed within 60 hours in the treated group vs. 132 hours in the untreated control group

In a confirmatory field study* in the United States (4), 425 sows and gilts in 11 herds at five locations were given 10 mg of LUTALYSE Sterile Solution on day 112 of gestation.

*Study reference Technical Report 631-9665-82-002

88.5 percent farrowed within 36 hours after the LUTALYSE injection.

When using LUTALYSE, as with all parenteral products, aseptic technique should be used to reduce the possibility of post-injection bacterial infections. Do not administer LUTALYSE in pregnant animals unless cessation of pregnancy is desired. Not for intravenous administration. Women of childbearing age and persons with respiratory problems should exercise extreme caution when handling LUTALYSE.
