Scheduled Farrowing
LUTALYSE® (dinoprost tromethamine) Sterile Solution used
for parturition induction increases productivity
Administering 2 mL of LUTALYSE
to sows within 72 hours of the expected farrowing date helps synchronize the farrowing schedule.
Benefits of parturition induction include:
A dose response study (3) compared sows and gilts treated
with LUTALYSE
to untreated sows and gilts.
coordination of tail docking, tooth clipping, iron injections, vaccinations, etc.
Figure 1: Cumulative percent sows/gilts farrowing during sequential 12-hour intervals
Study completed with sows/gilts injected once at 111-113 days of gestation.
Results shown:
In a confirmatory field study* in the United States (4), 425 sows and gilts
in 11 herds at five locations were given 10 mg of LUTALYSE
Sterile Solution on day 112 of gestation.

88.5 percent farrowed within 36 hours after the LUTALYSE injection.
When using LUTALYSE, as with all parenteral products, aseptic technique should be used to reduce the possibility of post-injection bacterial infections. Do not administer LUTALYSE in pregnant animals unless cessation of pregnancy is desired. Not for intravenous administration. Women of childbearing age and persons with respiratory problems should exercise extreme caution when handling LUTALYSE.
