Bovi-Shield® IBR
Bovine Rhinotracheitis Vaccine
(Modified Live Virus)

Description

  • This BOVI-SHIELD® vaccine contain highly immunogenic, modified live virus (MLV) for protection against respiratory diseases of cattle caused by infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR) virus. The MLV agent are propagated on established cell lines and packaged in multi-dose vials in freeze-dried form to maintain stability. BOVI-SHIELD vaccines are provided with a sterile diluent used to rehydrate the freeze-dried vaccine, which is administered in a 2 mL intramuscular dose.
Approved Uses

BOVI-SHIELD IBR is approved for:
  • Vaccination of healthy, non-pregnant cattle as in aid in preventing disease caused by IBR virus.
Key Features

The Science
  • The MLV strain of IBR virus in BOVI-SHIELD vaccines stimulates circulating antibodies and cellular immunity, a dual immune response that optimizes protection by killing IBR virus-infected cells and exposing them to circulating antibodies.
  • Unlike some MLV vaccines, there is no age restriction on use of BOVI-SHIELD vaccines.
  • BOVI-SHIELD MLV strains prime the cellular and humoral immune system of susceptible calves, giving them a healthy start to realize full genetic potential.
The Economics
  • Texas A&M ranch-to-rail data1 showed that compared to sick or treated calves, healthy, quality calves posted advantages of:
    • $17 efficiency in cost of gain/head
    • $23 savings in medicine cost/head
    • 14% more choice carcasses
    • $117 greater profitability/head
  • Buyers pay more for vaccinated calves. Colorado State University research showed that weaned, vaccinated calves sold for $21 a head more than non-vaccinated, unweaned calves.2
Packaging
  • 50 dose vials.

Dosage and Administration

  • General Directions:

Vaccine is administered in a 2 mL dose given intramuscularly. In accordance with Beef Quality Assurance guidelines, vaccine should be administered in the muscular region of the neck.

  • Primary Vaccination:

    BOVI-SHIELD IBR: Administer a single 2-mL dose.

  • Revaccination:

Annual revaccination with a single dose is recommended.

Precautions

  • Do not use BOVI-SHIELD IBR in pregnant cows (abortions can result) or in calves nursing pregnant cows. Only BOVI-SHIELD BRSV is approved for use in pregnant cows or calves nursing pregnant cows.
  • Use entire contents when first opened.
  • Sterilized syringes and needles should be used to administer this vaccine. Do not sterilize with chemicals because traces of disinfectant may inactivate the vaccine.
  • Burn containers and all unused contents.
  • Do not vaccinate within 21 days before slaughter.
  • Contains gentamicin as preservative.
  • As with many vaccines, anaphylaxis may occur after use. Initial antidote of epinephrine is recommended and should be followed with appropriate supportive therapy.
  • This product has been shown to be efficacious in healthy animals. A protective immune response may not be elicited if animals are incubating an infectious disease, are malnourished or parasitized, are stressed due to shipment or environmental conditions, are otherwise immunocompromised, or the vaccine is not administered in accordance with label directions.
  • For veterinary use only.
  • Store at 2°-7°C. Prolonged exposure to higher temperatures and/or direct sunlight may adversely affect potency. Do not freeze.
