Beef Product Overview
Makes It Profitable to Feed Heifers
Nine out of 10 cattlemen who feed heifers use MGA® (melengestrol acetate) Premix or Liquid Premix. Nothing works like MGA to keep heifers out of heat while improving rate of gain and feed conversion. Feeder heifers treated with MGA do less riding and bulling, so there's less dust, less bruising and more quality beef. MGA is also a favorite of cow-calf operators because of its ability to shorten calving seasons and produce more uniform calves at weaning. Whether you use it to improve rate of weight gain and feed efficiency in confined feeding heifers or for estrus suppression in breeding heifers, you'll find that MGA pays.
MGA Premix and Liquid Premix are indicated for increased rate of weight gain, improved feed utilization in heifers fed for slaughter, and suppression of estrus (heat) in breeding heifers or heifers fed for slaughter.
MGA 200 Premix is available in 50-lb bags.
MGA 500 Liquid Premix is available in 40-lb containers.
MGA should be thoroughly mixed in the supplement, then mixed in the complete ration of feedlot heifers to provide 0.25 mg to 0.50 mg of MGA per head per day in 1/2 lb to 2 lbs of supplement per head per day.
Average daily intake approximating the middle of this range provides the best blend of economical improvements in rate of gain and feed utilization with effective heat suppression. The highest degree of heat suppression is obtained with a constant daily intake of 0.35 mg to 0.50 mg per head per day. Estrus suppression on pasture is best achieved at the higher level (0.5 mg per day).
Possible reasons for heatbreak (lack of suppression):
Not effective in steers and spayed heifers.
Withdrawal periods of 3–5 days or more should be avoided to prevent the possibility that the heifers may come into estrus (heat) at loading time.
Do not exceed 24 days of feeding of melengestrol acetate to heifers intended for breeding.
